Summer Heat Tech Tips

ASCN, ASF & ASK

We all know how blistering hot it can get in Louisiana during the summer time, and getting into a hot car is no fun. You burn your legs on your hot leather seats, you feel like you need to wear oven mitts to touch your steering wheel and your dripping sweat before you even start your car! Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems. All Star Ford is here with some awesome summer tech tips to make sure your car is in perfect condition for the hot Louisiana weather.

Watch the seat buckles. Metal seat belt buckles can also get extremely hot in the sun. Use caution when buckling and try to avoid children handling the metal part of the buckles. Also, don’t be tempted to loosen car seat straps in the summer heat. Children need to be buckled up securely at all times to remain safe!

Use a sunshade. These windshield covers keep harmful rays out of your vehicle and while it will still be warm inside they do help keep the temperature down. In addition, sunshades will allow the car to cool faster reducing the time you need to use the air conditioning on high, which can save you some money in gas!

Tires need special care in warmer weather as high temperatures put added stress on them. To maximize tire life and safety, check the tire condition and inflation pressure monthly. It is also good to have the tires rotated every 5,000 – 6,000 miles. Summer heat will cause the pressure within a tire to rise, therefore, it’s important to check the pressure when tires are cold. You vehicle’s owner manual includes the recommended air pressure for your vehicle’s tires.

10 Ideas for Summer Fun

Here in South Louisiana, we know how excruciating the heat can get outside during the summer months. You don’t want the kids to go outside and overheat, but they can’t stay cooped up inside all day without you going crazy! So we have complied a list of some ideas for indoor and outdoor summer fun!

Visit Your Local Park

Visiting your local park for the day is such an easy way to have fun with the kiddos and not shell out any big bucks for amusement rides or park food. Simply pack lunch, a few snacks, and sunscreen. Some local parks also have a water park area so on a hot day your kiddos will love to play in the water! Just make sure to bring towels and extra clothes!

Have a Water Balloon Fight

Having a water balloon fight is an awesome way to get friends and neighbors involved! If your kiddos are too young/small to participate in the water balloon fight, get a kiddy pool, fill it with water and balloons and let them pop the balloons with their hands; they’ll have a ball!

Build a Fort in the Living Room

Growing up we all used to make forts in our living rooms. Now it is your turn to teach your kiddos how to make the perfect living room fort! Drape some old sheets over kitchen chairs or your couches. Put some sleeping bags and pillows inside and you are set! Eat dinner, watch movies or tell spooky stories! Whatever you do in your living room fort will sure to be some amazing memories!

Have a Luau in the Backyard

Invite friends, co-workers, family and neighbors over for a luau! Have activities such as limbo, make your own totem pole, and a pineapple eating contest! This is a fun way to get family and friends together. The kids can play and the parents and friends can visit! It’s a win-win!

Family Car Wash - ASAG, ASC, ASF

Hold a Car Wash

Park your car in the driveway and let your child give it a good scrub with a pot of water and sponge or with the garden hose. Get the whole family involved for added fun!

Visit an Educational Museum

Visiting an educational museum or a children’s museum is a fun way to get out of the summer heat! Museums are a great way to get your child interacting with experiments, the solar system or whatever else is at the museum. It can also give you some great home DIY project ideas to do when the museum is closed on the weekends or holidays!

Play Local Tourists

Learn more about your city’s history, local shops and new restaurants. You can ask friends and family for new and exciting places to go around town, or use Virtual Tourist to help you along the way!

Start a Craft Class

Most crafts stores — including chains like Michaels, A. C. Moore, and Hobby Lobby — offer hands-on activities just for kids such as scrapbooking, box decorating, bead stringing, as well as projects using clay, pipe cleaners, and more! Some classes are free; others require a nominal fee — typically $5 or less. For more information about classes, visit Michaels or Hobby Lobby, you can visit your local craft store!

Paint Party

Get huge canvases or and old piece of cardboard and set it up outside for the kiddos to paint on. Do it in the grass so you will not have to worry about paint stains on the concrete. Hang the finished painting to dry then display it in your child’s room or throughout the house!

Twister Shaving Cream - ASAG, ASC, ASCN, ASDCJR, ASF, ASFL, ASH

Play Twister with Colored Shaving Cream

If you have Twister on hand, this is a fun way to spice the game up! The kids will love it and it is so funny watching everyone slip around! Purchase multiple cans of shaving cream and food coloring. Simply empty the contents of the shaving cream into a bucket, drop as many drops as you want of the food coloring and mix it together. Make sure to keep all four of the colors in separate buckets. Once all of the colors are mixed, scoop out a blob of colored shaving cream onto the correct dot on the Twister board. Then you are ready to play Twister! The food coloring will stain your clothing, so make sure to wear old clothes!

All of these activities are inexpensive and a sure way to make the summer much more fun!
